Every team makes moves in the offseason with hopes of improving their chances of playing October baseball, but these big moves can often backfire as nothing is ever guaranteed in the sport of baseball. While much praise is often given to general managers across the league for a lot of the players they pickup, there is a risk factor with each one of them.
These risks often are not looked at when the contract is agreed upon but today, fans get an inside look at what can go wrong with the biggest offseason signing with each American League team.
Baltimore Orioles: Delmon Young
The Orioles offseason wasn’t that exciting as their biggest move was resigning, who played in only 83 games for the team last year, most of them as a reserve corner outfielder and DH. There are a lot of things to like about Young, who hit over .300 for the first time in his career last season, but he also totaled a career low seven home runs. The Orioles lost 40 home runs in Nelson Cruz and he was a huge reason why Baltimore won the AL East in 2014. If Young can’t help fill the hole left by Cruz than Baltimore could easily fall behind in their talented division.
